Investing in White Supremacy

Every now and then something happens to remind me of the frailty of ideas. Tolerance of difference, acceptance of diversity and judging people based on one-on-one personal experience are not universal rights or understandings to which we all subscribe. Multiculturalism doesn't happen on its own. Tribal loyalties and the petty fears of difference seem to pursue our society relentlessly, whether expressed in youth gang loyalties or the firebombing of schools in Montreal.

Sometimes, as in the case of the Olympics, we can coexist with them - our group impulses (geographic, cultural, dialectic, national) reconciled with those of the others, all subscribing to a mythology of fair play and competition. We can bridge the gaps between us. This is noble and good in a symbolic and representative way.

Other times, like today, I am reminded how recently we staggered free of the primordial ooze, that we are only 150 years from legalized slavery, only 80 years from disenfranchised women, only 30 years from a time when a wife could not open a bank account in Canada without her husband's signature. Witness:

William Regnery, the 'famously reclusive' member of the Regnery publishing family, is looking for investors for a whites-only dating service.
