Purloined Restaurant July Menu

All of these items, or at least the ideas for them, have been stolen from elsewhere. Cookbooks, newspapers, TV shows, restaurants. Everything is fair game as a source to be purloined.


Starters

Go see Global Metal

Last night we went to the opening of Global Metal here in Vancouver at Tinseltown. Although they maintain the city's worst theatre popcorn, Tinseltown does show some good flicks. Damn them. Because the popcorn and the location both stink.

But enough griping. Global Metal made up for the location.

As a sequel to Sam Dunn and Scott McFadyen's first movie, Metal: a headbanger's journey, Global Metal is another great leap forward for anyone interested in how cultures intermingle, change and are adopted at every scale from global to local. Their storytelling abilities are greatly improved and some of the images are really wonderful. Totally worth seeing on the big screen. And the music rocks and the crowd scenes are fantastic.

But what really sets the both Metal and Global Metal apart from most documentaries is the intimacy and enthusiasm of the filmmakers. Dunn is an avowed metal head from Victoria, BC, and it shows. He's intensely curious about the culture and a fan at the same time. Shooting the crowd and part of the crowd. It's really charming.

And it's a Canadian film that you should support by going to see it at the theatre. It's opened in Vancouver and Toronto this week, and opening in Montreal and Calgary next week. If you can't find a date for it to open in your city, get a copy (c'mon, you must know how) and screen it yourself. Then tell the filmmakers about it, because that's how they came up with the idea for Global Metal — they got it from their fans.
