Up in Ontario: The Sightings

Toronto

My friend Craig Konyu wrote in the comments section of the Up in Ontario Blog that the novel we're all crazy about, Up in Ontario, has appeared in Toronto stores. Craig spotted Up in Ontario in the Pages bookstore (Queen West).

At the time of the sighting, Pages had 3 copies. When Craig left the store, they had 2. If you know anyone in the Toronto area (GTA), let them know they can pick up their copies of Up in Ontario at Pages.

As Craig says, "Congrats, again, James. She's a beaut!"

Winnipeg

Jeff Southam reports from Winnipeg that Up in Ontario is available at the McNallyRobinson bookstore (Grant Park). Jeff has a daughter who is 6 and a son who is 4 and reports, "James, I can't read this book to my kids you horn dog. Was your hair messed when you wrote this book?"

Highlights from the Blog

Recently in the Up in Ontario blog a few posts have drawn a lot of readers. Here are a few excerpts from favourites.

Winter Fishing in Three Parts

Part 1 - Winter Fishing on the Upper Squamish

I called my friend cb on his cell phone so I wouldn't wake the whole house. There was no answer. I left a message and hung up the phone and sat in the dark for about 10 minutes, until the green numbers of the clock on the microwave read 6:14 am. We had planned the night before to go fishing. I called again. No answer. I did not leave a message.

Part 2 - And the World Was Silent

Now fully geared up, cb and I crossed the road to a break in the trees where a short path led down to the water of the Squamish River. We stepped into the water and watched where we stepped, careful not to walk over the redds containing the eggs of spawned salmon. The channel of water we surveyed was calm and shallow, flowing over a gravely bottom.

Part 3 - From the River

We started back downstream. Snow now covered the round rocks beneath our feet and made the walking easy and silent. At the break where cb had landed the two bull trout earlier we stopped for a final try at the fish. We had been expecting all day to see some silver coho but so far had seen none, not even a stray. Once again, cb and I started to cast about 10 feet apart, then he moved downstream and I moved upstream.

Blog Contributors

A few of you have taken me up on my offer to publish your stories in the blog. So am I satisfied? Hell no.

I'm looking for more good stories. I don't care if your publications credits are mostly drawn from the company intranet or the inside of birthday cards. If you have a story to tell, then I want to hear it.

Send me an email (james{at}upinontario.com) and we'll start the process.

Asking for the Sale

I was reminded of the most basic lesson of salesmanship the other day. Here's how it went.

I often visit a local restaurant named Toscani for lunch. The place serves great fresh food at a reasonable price. The fellow behind the counter who cooks and the woman at the front who works the till are husband and wife and own the place as well. They work hard and have built a great business for themselves.

I placed my order at the till, paid, then walked to the coffee shop next door to get a coffee while my salmon cooked. I returned to Toscani with my coffee and the cook handed me my meal to go. He looked at the paper cup in my hand and asked me if I liked the type of coffee I had bought. I replied that I did. He smiled and asked me to give him a try, pointing at the espresso machine he stood beside. I told him I would, and I will, because he asked me to. And that reminded me that the most important part of selling is asking for the sale.

So, will you buy my book? A copy of Up in Ontario costs about $20.

Think of it, for the same money you could almost see two movies. Or you could see one movie and have a popcorn. But don't waste you money, those are empty calories and empty stories. Engage yourself with a novel. I recommend Up in Ontario. I enjoyed writing it. I think you'll enjoy reading it.
